Remedial massage
Remedial Massage may help manage muscle pain, tightness, joint stiffness, postural issues, and nerve-related symptoms like numbness or tingling. It can also support recovery from injuries, reduce scar tissue, and improve mobility.
Beyond physical relief, massage may ease stress-related tension, headaches, and pregnancy discomforts, while also aiding fluid movement and lymphatic flow. Athletes often use massage for training recovery and performance preparation.
What is remedial massage?
Background
Remedial massage is a hands-on form of manual therapy that incorporates a range of techniques, including deep tissue massage, lymphatic drainage, pregnancy massage, acupressure, and myofascial release.
While it may feel relaxing, remedial massage differs from relaxation massage in that it includes assessment, diagnosis and treatment of specific musculoskeletal issues.
Treatment aims
Remedial massage aims to relieve muscle tension, restore joint and spinal mobility, and release fascial restrictions. Musculoskeletal pain can stem from muscles, fascia, joints, bones, or nerves.
A comprehensive assessment helps to pinpoint the source of pain so that treatment can be tailored to address it effectively.
When to use it
Remedial massage may be used as a standalone treatment or integrated with other therapies such as physiotherapy, osteopathy, or chiropractic care. In my practice, I often combine remedial massage with acupuncture to enhance treatment outcomes.

Practitioners must hold at least a Diploma of Remedial Massage and be registered with a recognized regulatory body. It is also the only type of massage eligible for rebates through private health insurance in Australia.
